What is The Best Furniture?

So what is the best furniture? As we all know, not all furniture is created equal. In an effort to protect profit margins, some of our most well recognized brands have gone overseas for their furniture manufacturing. Since I'm not here to say whether furniture is better or worse if it comes from overseas, I'll use this post to list what you should look for in a piece of furniture...particularly sofas, chairs, and sectionals.

Warranty
A clear indication of quality is the warranty or guarantee. If the company backs the furniture for life, then there is a very good chance it's quality made.
Construction
For sofas, using layered hardwoods or kiln dried hardwoods that resist warping and cracking represent quality construction.
Made in The USA
This matters most if you're getting something custom made. If you're buying something off the floor, then making sure its in good shape is something you should do visually. Don't buy a low priced price of furniture unless you can take it home with you or unless you know there are dozens of replacements available in the US for the next several years because that's when your furniture is likely to incur problems. Getting another one from overseas after a year or so might be virtually impossible.
NOTE: A little known secret in the department store industry is this: when a piece of furniture is sold and needs to be returned, they have someone pick it up and throw it away. Yes, throw it away. Even if you've only had it for a week. What they know is, the furniture is not worth saving.
Spring System
An 8-way hand tied spring system is the best. The others are only good if the gauge of wire is adequate to withstand the stress your family will place on it. Bigger/Heavily people should get 8 way hand tied springs because an 8 way hand tied spring system can take more pressure.

It's good to ask yourself, "what is the best furniture?" But, maybe its better to ask this question: "what is the best furniture for the money?" Are we all looking for furniture that's about value? Are we smart enough to not believe the marketing machine or be fooled by "lipstick on a pig" furniture? Furniture can be expensive. Don't make an emotional decision. Buy because you have confidence in the value.

Quality Furniture...How Do You Know?

At this point, you've typed in the word quality furniture and are looking for answers. You're looking for search results that yield the best furniture for the money. Maybe your search is for quality furniture. Maybe your search is to learn about what makes up a great piece of quality furniture.

Here are some things you should look for:

Wood
The frame should be made of hardwoods that have been treated in such a way that the wood will resist cracking or warping. Layered hardwoods are a popular way of making sure the wood doesn't crack or warp.
Springs
The furniture industry has long considered 8-way hand tied spring construction as the gold standard for quality made furniture. While this is true, there are other spring systems that are good quality. Drop in coil units (ones very similar to 8 way hand tied springs) but without the 8 ties are good quality. Sinuous spring systems can be good quality depending on the gauge of the wire and how far apart the wire is. With wire, the lower the gauge, the stronger the wire. For example, 9 gauge wire is stronger than 12 or 16 gauge wire. A sinuous spring system is made by using wavy wire stapled from the front of the sofa to the back in a arched shape. The arch allows for give when a person sits on the sofa. Additional springs are then placed next to each other. As you can imagine, the farther apart these wires are placed, the less likely it is to hold up over time.
Origin
While I'm not silly enough to believe the United States is the only country that makes quality furniture, I do believe as a rule, better quality furniture is made here for one simple reason: Mass production. Manufacturers and retailers who make or sell furniture from overseas normally have to make it in mass quantities. Shipping costs, tariffs, warehousing, etc. all cost money. In order to make a profit, quality is usually sacrified. The other limitation overseas manufacturers have is you really cannot buy something custom from overseas. Most items you want custom made must come from close by because of potential problems. If there's a mistake you're going to have to wait a long time to fix the problem.
Construction
While it's hard to tear apart a piece of furniture and see how its made, a good indicator of quality is the warranty or guarantee placed on the furniture. If the frame is lifetime guaranteed, then there's a good chance it's good quality.
Surge stitched
If the fabric is finished using a surge stitch, then it's likely to be better quality. This type of stitch keeps the fabric from fraying and allows for longer use.
Fabric
Make sure you touch or feel the fabrics you are considering. Some fabrics are just better made. For example, a poor quality microfiber fabric will have a gray backing. This means the color is essentially spray painted on. Eventually, the surface will wear away leaving just the backing. This is not what you want.

If you consider the above when buying your next piece of furniture, you're likely to be very satisfied with what you purchase.

Furniture Layout

The "Furniture Layout" Dilemma - How Do You Layout Your Furniture to Make the Perfect Room?
Furniture layout software can help if you're designing a big space or have a room and are just toying around or dreaming about what you might want in the room some day. BUT, if you're furnishing a family room or another room in your home and need to really find out what the room is going to feel like, furniture software is nowhere near as good as just laying out the pieces of the room using a good ole fashion tape measure, newspapers, and a few more helpful items.

Here's what you'll need to layout the furniture pieces for your room:

Tape measure
Dimensions of all the pieces (width and depth)
Newspaper
Scotch Tape
Scissors
Sharpie or marker (be careful not to write on the rug or floor!)

Once you have all the above, set out to create the footprint for each piece by laying out, cutting (if necessary), and taping newspaper pages together in the shape and dimensions of each piece. Label each piece. Once you've done this, you're now able to layout all the furniture pieces around the room. As you can probably imagine, doing it this way allows you to move the pieces around and see how different configurations will affect the flow of the room. Another benefit to using our approach is you can see how much walking space there is around your furniture. You can even walk through yourself to see and feel how the room will be with the real pieces of furniture. Mix and match pieces. Change the location of the pieces to create a better flow. It might really affect which pieces to buy.

One more than one occasion, we've had customers say this way was a much better solution to using furniture layout software and did significantly affect which pieces they eventually purchased. Furniture is expensive and it's hard to make changes without wasting a ton of time, energy, and money to fix the problem. Good luck creating the perfect room!

Note: Some people use masking tape and tape the dimensions of the pieces to the floor but that isn't as flexible as this is.

Cottage Style Sofa

When it comes to the cottage style sofa, white fabrics are always going to have a place. Lately, however, the trend is toward off whites, muted earthtones (steel gray, sand) and muted greens and blues. At least recently, colors like reds and yellows are not as popular.

Also, top-stitching has become a popular design element with slipcovered and cottage style sofa design. Below is an example of what top-stitching looks like.

Top-Stitch Sofa

Top-stitching is a technique used so welting is not necessary. Notice the difference in both sofas. Also called piping or cording, A top-stitch allows the sofa to have a different look. Top-Stitched Cottage Style Slipcovered Furniture Is In

Lately, lots of the cottage style home furnishing magazines and small home furnishing boutiques have been featuring top-stitched slipcovered furniture. Have you noticed? What is top-stitching? Top-stitching is a technique where-by a piece of furniture is made without welting. The "top-stitch" technique is used to give the seam a clean finished look without the need for the cording or welting.
We've seen a big increase in furniture featuring this technique. I was in Destin, FL early this summer and noticed lots of top-stitched slipcovered furniture on display. The advantages to top-stitching are there is no visible wear and tear on the cording. Sometimes, after several years of use, the cording around the seat cushions can look more worn due the the constant rubbing it gets. Each time someone sits on the sofa, the cording is under pressure. This pressure can lead to fading and/or a worn look. If your piece gets a ton of use, eventually the cording could wear away entirely leaving a hole in the fabric itself. Top-stitching eliminates this issue.

Slipcovered Sofa - Why Have One?

Although, by popularity, the slipcovered sofa is a distant third to the upholstered sofa and leather sofa, it is gaining in popularity.

The reasons are several:

1. Flexibility - A slipcovered sofa is just more flexible than your leather sofa or upholstered sofa. A slipcovered sofa can be dramatically changed by getting a new slipcover. For about the same price as a quality leather sofa might cost, you can get a slipcovered sofa with 2 different custom made slipcovers. Whether you buy both slipcovers at the same time or buy the second slipcover later, the flexibility is appealing to some customers.

2. Look and Feel - The look and feel of a slipcovered sofa suggests a relaxed environment. Every 6 months, the furniture industry has it's big trade show in High Point, NC. It's significant because it's where home furnishing companies introduce new furniture styles, fabrics, and accents. Although "market" takes place in October and April, the new fall introductions typically are ready for sale and production starting now. How do you measure value in furniture?

Nantuckit Furniture Company started in 2005 with this question in mind. We searched for and talked to literally hundreds of furniture experts to find furniture that gives the consumer the best "bang for the buck." When we first started, we concentrated only on slipcovered furniture. We found 1 manufacturing partner who was making the kind of furniture we wanted to sell. Apparently, the latest and greatest in furniture styles is casual contemporary. You may be seeing it in the home furnishing magazines.

With the housing market the way it is, homeowners continue to stay where they are and upgrade or update what they have. This is also a trend we are noticing. Instead of buying new, people are updating what they have. For consumers who are buying new, many are looking for ways to make their money go farther and build in flexibility.

What if you plan on moving (the average stay in a home is 7 years)? You'll need to think through how you might plan to decorate a new home. To do that, you'll want to shop for furniture that offers some flexibility. For example, one of our customers purchased a huge sectional with a very specific configuration. She moved shortly after she got her sectional (job change) Furniture that you can change, if desired. In most cases, changing existing furniture means changing the fabric. As I reflect on 2009, I remember all the good things that have happened in my life. It's hard to stay focused on these things sometimes, because business wise, this will not go down as a banner year for many of us. Unemployment is over 10% and the economy is struggling to create the foundation for a potential recovery. But, there is a lot to be thankful for. God has been good to my family and I see his handy work everywhere I look.

Let's close the door on 2009 and bring in 2010 with a bang. Small business is going to have to pull this economy out of its misery so join me in supporting small business. They create 90% of the jobs and we need to create jobs.

When should I buy furniture?

Have you ever wondered if there is a good and bad time to buy furniture? I'm not sure there is a "good" time or a "bad" time to buy furniture but here are some things we've learned that might affect your decision to purchase furniture.

1. Statistics show, the most furniture is purchased from January to about June. Then, people take the summer off and furniture purchases get put on the back burner. Once school starts, furniture buying heats up again because people make plans for the holidays and want their homes to look just right for loved ones and friends.

2. The furniture industry introduces and discontinues new furniture groups every May and November. Each manufacturer is different but you are bound to find the latest styles if you do your shopping during these months. If you are looking for the "latest and maybe greatest", this is a good time to find the new stuff.

3. America loves a sale. It seems like most people are buying big ticket items like furniture, tv's, appliances, etc. around major holidays or sale events. Americans have been conditioned to wait for big sales before purchasing. While undoubtedly, there are deals to be had, some furniture companies play games with sales too.

4. When seasons change, especially from winter to spring, people start thinking about furniture. They've been couped up in the house for several months and have just gotten tired of their current furniture. It's time for a change.

If you're considering buying furniture, my best advice is to buy it when you need it and can afford it. Styles may change slightly. Color fads may change. But, if you buy a popular frame, that will stand the test of time, in a popular fabric, you'll be fine.

Mantaining your cushions

We're often asked how to best maintain furniture cushions. First, lets talk about seat cushions in general. The key thing to remember is all cushions have to be maintained. Lots of times, people think you only need to maintain down cushions. Not true. All cushions need to be maintained if you want to get the most life out of your cushions. Secondly, there is a saying, "down dies." In my experience, that's true. Over time, down cushions will eventually wear out or "die."

How do you extend the life of your cushions?

Like your down bed pillow, furniture cushions need to be fluffed. The best way to maintain any cushion and get the bounce and crown back into the cushion is to take each cushion off your sofa. One by one, lean each cushion up against your legs and pound each side of the cushion 2-3 times against the floor. As you do this, the air returns to the cushions. Make sure your rotate the cushion against your leg and "pound" all four sides. This technique also repositions each cushions' insides. They'll look almost new and you'll have the sit you remember when you first purchased furniture.

How often do I need to fluff my cushions?

This is the key difference between standard cushions and down cushions. Regular cushions need to be fluffed probably once every other week. Down cushions, however, should probably be fluffed once a week. It does depend on how often you use your sofa, sectional, or chair. If your furniture is located in a high traffic and gets a lot of use, you'll need to do it more often than if the furniture was in a infrequently used room. It all depends on how often you use the furniture. Finally, the quality of the cushions do impact how well you can maintain them and how long they will last. Furniture is a big purchase. If at all possible, buy quality so you can make your purchase last as long as possible. Also, look for companies who'll see you replacement cushions or (if buying slipcovered furniture) replacement slipcovers. This way, you can almost create a new sofa for a fraction of the price of purchasing a brand new sofa.

These pointers should dramatically improve the cushions you have and how long you can make them last.

Everyone's talking about eco friendly products. Lots of people talk about eco friendly furniture. I'd like to make the case for why slipcovered furniture is eco friendly furniture.

First, it saves trees. Just so we're clear, I'm not talking about the $69 "sheet" you buy at some store, throw it over your sofa and call it slipcovered. I'm talking about top of the line custom slipcovered furniture. Furniture that has a custom made slipcover for each seat cushion, back cushion, throw pillow and the body or frame.

If you purchase custom slipcovered furniture, make sure the company archives the patterns forever because that's how long you need to be able go get a replacement. Also, make sure the furniture is lifetime guaranteed.

Secondly, eco friendly slipcovered furniture keeps furniture frames out of landfills. If you purchase custom slipcovered furniture, the only thing that gets discarded is the fabric. When you purchase a brand new slipcover, you create waste with the fabric...but nothing else. The alternative is to purchase upholstered furniture, use it, throw it away and repeat. This approach uses many more resources than just cotton. Cotton is much more easily grown than trees.

With businesses being slower, it is taking less time to make custom furniture. Over the last 3 months, we have been noticing it takes more like 4-6 weeks to make and deliver your furniture. The Economy?

No question, things have been slow. Over the first 3 months of 2009, we were down significantly from last year, and especially 2007. In 2007, we thought we were headed to the moon. During the first 3 months of 2009, the moon seemed like a long way away.

Recently, I have noticed customers coming back. In the last two weeks specifically, things have picked up. I have no concrete evidence and it could be just because people have received tax return checks or whatever but I'm hopeful this is the start of at least the bottom. Everyone I speak with feels sort of the same way. If we can just find the bottom and not worry about falling further, then we can start to make sure the foundation is solid. Once the foundation is solid, then we can start building the USA economic house again.

Vacation home furniture

As the owner of a slipcovered furniture company, I am proud of what I saw on my recent vacation to Santa Rosa Beach, FL. We recently vacationed on Santa Rosa Beach in a beautiful condo complex called Adagio Beach Rentals. I highly recommend it. The condos are beautiful, especially the ones with slipcovered furniture in them! I know I am maybe overly promoting slipcovered furniture here but it is amazing how great it looks in a beach home, vacation home, or vacation condo setting. The relaxed look is perfect. We actually stayed in a condo unit that had an upholstered sofa and loveseat. The cushions we so beat up you could hardly sit on them. It was really a shame to have the furniture they did in such a great condo. When you consider furniture for your second home, vacation home, or vacation condo, really think about slipcovered furniture. I'm biased. I understand that. But seeing slipcovered furniture scattered throughout many of the condos we stayed in, it really reinforces how perfect this kind of furniture is.

Client’s family room has Khaki beige walls with end wall painted a slate blue, white trim, white tile floor with a light off white area rug. She currently has a red body fabric on 2 of Nantuckit’s Caitlyn sofas and a red plaid body fabric on a Caitlyn chair. She wanted to have a second slipcover for the summer. She is not concerned about fabric being washable. We have chosen 10547-19 Natural for the body fabric on the 2 Caitlyn sofas with 12810-34 Blue as the accent throw pillows. The 10547-19 is a Wearwell fabric and is washable. We have chosen 14921-34 Ice Blue for her Caitlyn chair. We selected the sofa body fabric 10547-19 Natural to be washable since these are larger pieces and lighter fabrics. They will need to be cleaned more often than the 14921-34 Ice Blue chair. The blue in the throw pillows and the chair body fabric will accent with the slate blue wall.

A client has a family room which is open to her kitchen. Her colors are neutral (gray, black, white, and taupe). The countertops in the kitchen are soapstone in gray/black. She wants a washable slipcover. We selected the topsider natural for the body fabric. The topsider natural is a softer look. We selected the lenox kohl and welsh kohl for the accent throw pillows.

Washing your slipcover

For best results when washing your slipcover, take the following steps...

1. Remove the slipcover for the sofa carefully.

2. Make sure your slipcover fabric is machine washable.

3. Wash on cold water (maybe warm if the fabric is pre-washed) using a mild detergent.

4. Use the air dry function on your dryer. DO NOT USE HEAT unless your fabric has been hot washed and hot dried prior to being made/sewn.

5. Remove the slipcover slightly damp from the dryer and place on furniture to dry completely.

6. Gently steam, if necessary, to remove any unwanted wrinkles.

If you follow these instructions each time you wash your slipcover, you will dramatically extend its usable life. But, remember most slipcovers are made from cotton. Cotton is a natural fabric and will shrink if not handled properly. Also, cotton is not stain proof. It's best to deal with a stain immediately to reduce the effects a spill might have on your custom slipcovered furniture.

For active families, slipcovered furniture is a wonderful option. Personally, I can't imagine having small kids and not have the ability to wash/clean our furniture's upholstery. Washing your slipcover is pretty easy and the benefits of clean furniture are outstanding.

1. You can clean it! I personally cannot imagine sitting in dried spilled drinks, ground in food, skin, dust mites, etc., etc. etc.

Fabric Durability

Which fabrics are durable and which aren’t?

We get many questions on which fabric is most durable versus which fabrics are least durable. Because most of our customers have families who spend a lot of time on their furniture, considerations about durability can be different from customer to customer.

First, most companies determine durability using a “pin pricker” test. This test involves a machine with a pin that runs over the fabric. Durability is determined by how many times the pin runs over the fabric before it snags the fabric. If the fabric snags quickly, the fabric is determined to be “light durability”. The more times the pricker runs over the fabric without snagging, the higher the durability…according to the test.

Now, there are obvious flaws in the test because durability takes on many different definitions, depending on the customer. Some customers, for example, think durability means stain resistant. Some think it means a fabric that hides stains. Some think durability means a heavy fabric that will resist wear.

Your idea of durability will make a big difference in which fabric you select.

Kids! We’ve got a handful in our house. They range in age from very little to almost teenager.

Question: Are kids allowed to do whatever they want and the “maid” or “butler” (Mom and Dad) will pick up after them?

I actually feel like our kids are well behaved but we are constantly picking up after them. Eating on our furniture is a particuarly favorite pasttime. I guess it’s fine…until the spills. Then, the thought of sitting in yesterday’s snack becomes pretty unappealing.

I think I must have a little “Jerry Seinfeld” in me but I do get tired of sitting on dirty furniture. I have really gotten used to the fact we can machine wash our Nantuckit furniture. I know, I know….We’re biased but is it really that fun to sit on upholstered furniture with dried liquids, ground in food, and God knows what else?

10 years ago, my wife and I bought slipcovered furniture from a well known retailer. It wasn't cheap. For a sofa, chair 1/2, and ottoman we paid something like $3,600. We liked it, however, and looked forward to having it for a long time. Roughly 3 years later, we noticed, from wear and tear, the fabric was starting to get a little worn. Actually, we also were moving and my wife wanted a new look. Since the frame was in great shape and the cushions we also in great shape, we called this very well known national retalier and asked them if we could get a replacement slipcover(s) for our furniture. 8 way hand tied

What is 8 way hand tied spring construction? Is it worth the extra money?

8 way hand tied springs are circular coils placed in the frame of a piece of furniture. These circular coils are placed throughout the bottom of frame and welded together to a metal frame. The metal frame is then attached to the wood frame and creates the area where the seat cushions are placed or the deck of the piece of furniture. Once the metal coils and metal base are all attached, a laborer ties each coil eight ways to other coils in the frame.

The result is a spring system that considered the "gold standard" in furniture frame construction. 8 way hand tied frames are designed to better distribute weight. Because they are tied together, when you sit down, more springs do the work and create less stress on just a few springs.

Other spring systems, depending on how they are made, might sag or not perform as well because the springs do not work together.

There are several factors as to why a sofa might perform well or poorly with a given spring system. 8 way hand tied, sinuous, elastomeric webbing, drop in coil, and zoned coil are all forms of furniture spring systems.

Today, furniture makers have a pretty clear idea of what certain spring systems can do and cannot do. More than anything, the "gage" of wire is as important to the spring system as any other factor. Quality manufacturers still offer 8 way hand tied springs. But, these days, it doesn't necessarily mean the sofa is poorly made if the springs are not 8 way hand tied.

How do you select a fabric?

At Nantuckit, we have some suggestions about how to select fabrics:

1. Screen resolutions don't always give a good representation of what the fabric color, texture, of pattern really is. We send free swatches which takes care of these concerns.

2. Put the swatches to the test. Spill something on each swatch. "comb" them over your pet. Let your kids play with them. Then wash them in the washing machine on cold and don't use heat when you dry. This will give you a great indication of how the fabric will perform.

3. Touch and feel. More than any other reason, this is why people select one fabric over another. It is a little harder to select a new fabric, and know how soft it will be, because fabrics do soften up. A cotton twill fabric may seem a little stiff at first but these fabrics do soften with use and washing.

4. Remember your lifestyle. If you have pets, for example, you will probably not choose a chenille or damask fabric. The reason is pets have claws. Claws snag fabric. Chenille and damask fabrics have a "pile" or raised texture and will snag easier. Any fabric with a raised texture will not be a great choice for pets unless you have complete control over you pets.

Microfiber fabrics should not be chosen in areas where it's hot. People sweat where it's hot. Microfiber fabrics don't "breathe" well because the fabric is woven so tightly. When fabrics don't breath, they don't do well in warm weather.

Those of you looking for custom slipcovers have found all slipcovers are not created equally. Our custom slipcovers are created from a pattern designed to fit over a specific piece of furniture.

Lifetime guaranteed furniture gets thrown around by furniture companies all the time. But, be careful about the definition of lifetime guaranteed furniture. There are differences. The most basic and clear definition of lifetime guaranteed means guaranteed for your life. There should be no dispute. The finest furniture companies and manufacturers stand behind their furniture for your lifetime...as long as you are living.

The second definition, means "product lifetime" guaranteed. This definition usually means the furniture is guaranteed for its lifetime or typically 7 years. Obviously, this is not the same as the first definition and is a clear quality distinction.

Make sure you are purchasing furniture with a "your lifetime guarantee" and not a product lifetime guarantee unless you plan on throwing it away at some point.

Question: Scotchguard?

Question: Do we scotchguard our fabrics?

Answer: No.

Reason: In our opinion, it's a ripoff when a furniture company offers to scotchguard your fabric. They'll usually charge $100 or so when you can go to your local home improvement store and get Scotchguard for $10...and do it yourself. We do recommend you do it with the furniture outdoors or at least in a well ventilated area. Use a mask so you don't inhale any fumes from the scotchguard.

Some of our customers swear by scotchguard. We don't have an opinion either way but it does affect the 1 year warranty of our fabrics. So we recommend, if you are going to scotchguard your fabric, do it after one year.

Scotch guard is intended to help with stain resistance. It is often used on fabrics that get a lot of use by kids, pets, etc. Nantuckit recommends you read the directions carefully and/or go to 3M for more information.

Here's how you buy furniture online...

Accurately measure a piece of furniture you have in your home...and enjoy sitting in!

First, measure the seat height. This is the distance from the floor to the top crown of the seat cushion. (fluff your cushion so you get an accurate measurement of what it was when you purchased it. cushions can flatten over time).

Second, Measure the seat depth. This is the distance from the front edge of the sofa to the front of the back cushion where your back touches the back cushion (Also fluff this cushion). This should give you a good idea of what kind of seat height and seat depth you are looking for.

Third, find out if you prefer softer cushions or firmer cushions. Do you like cushions that give you a sit down, hold you in place kind of feel? Or, do you like cushions that give you a sit down, sink down kind of feel?

The overall depth of the piece is not as important as the seat depth and seat height. Standard seat height is about 20-21". Standard seat depth is about 21".
